Problems, Possible Causes, and Solutions

CAUSES

CORRECTIONS

1. Leak around the valve stem.
  • Loose packing nut.  The valve must be able to be adjusted using 1-1/4 to 2 in. lbs. of torque.
  • Tighten the packing nut.
  • Worn or damaged packing.
  • Replace the valve stem assembly.
2. Leak at the nozzle coupling nut.
  • Damaged cone seating surface.
  • Replace the head or nozzle mixer.
  • Worn or damaged O-rings.
  • Replace the O-rings on the nozzle mixer.
3. Flame flickers during use.
  • Loose stainless steel balls in the control valves.
  • Replace the valve stem assembly.
4. Torch pops excessively.
  • Starving flame.
  • Increase flow of fuel and oxygen.
  • Obstructions in tip.
  • Clean or replace tip.
  • The regulator is delivering insufficient gas.
  • Replace the regulator.
  • Low cylinder pressure.
  • Replace the cylinder.
  • Improper regulator setting.
  • Check for proper regulator setting.
  • Internal leaks in torch.
5. Difficulty in maintaining a neutral flame.
  • Regulator not functioning properly.
  • Test and repair the regulator.
  • Hoses pinched or clogged.
  • Clear the hoses.
  • Control valves damaged.
  • Replace the control valves.

CAUTION: Welding apparatus that is improperly maintained or repaired can be dangerous.  Some parts and accessories from one manufacturer may fit apparatus from other manufacturers, but the assembly may not conform to the standards of either manufacturer.  For your own safety, specify and use parts and attachments from only one manufacturer in any assembly according to that manufacturer's specifications.

Service and repair of welding apparatus should be performed only by a qualified repair technician.  Improper service or repair, or modification of a product could result in damage to the product or injury to the operator.
