Test Procedures for Victor Cutting Attachments

Important Notes

  1. Test with oil-free air or dry nitrogen only.
  2. Always wear eye protection while testing.
  1. Attach the cutting attachment to the appropriate torch handle.

  2. Attach the torch handle to the hoses.

  3. Figure 1Install a cutting attachment head plug or tip blank.  Tighten the tip nut to 15-20 ft. lbs. of torque for Victor CA1060, 2450 and CAN1060, and 10 ft. lbs. of torque for all other cutting attachments, assuring the test gas cannot pass from the fuel side to the oxygen side in the torch head.

  4. Pressurize the oxygen and fuel side of the cutting attachment to 40 PSIG for all cutting attachments.

  5. Submerse the torch and cutting attachment in water.

  6. Open the oxygen and fuel control valves on the torch handle and the cutting oxygen valve on the cutting attachment.  Check around all connections for leaks.  There should be no leakage past the packing in the valve stem assembly in five (5) seconds.  Tighten the packing nut until it requires 1-1/4 to 2 in. lbs. of torque to adjust the valves.

  7. Close the oxygen control valve on the cutting attachment and the fuel control valve on the torch.  Use 7 or 8 in. lbs. of torque.  Turn the control valves in a clockwise direction.

  8. Remove the cutting attachment head plug.  There should be no leakage through the oxygen control valve on the cutting attachment in five (5) seconds.  If there is a leak, bubbles will come through the head.

  9. Release the pressure from both sides of the torch.

  10. Attach the torch handle to oxygen and fuel gas sources.

  11. Install a tip in the head and tighten the tip nut to 15-20 ft. lbs. of torque.

  12. Light the tip and adjust to a neutral flame.

  13. Open the cutting oxygen valve.  Some adjustment will be necessary to maintain the neutral flame.

Figure 3Position the tip 10 degrees from vertical and rotate it against a fire brick for 5-8 seconds.  The torch should make a popping sound.  If the flame goes out and the torch makes a whistling sound immediately turn off the oxygen then the fuel.   This is caused by a back-burn or flashback.  If this occurs, repeat steps 12-14.  If this occurs more than twice, disassemble and examine the torch and replace any damaged parts.

  15. Turn off the oxygen and acetylene gas supplies.

  16. Bleed the pressure from the torch and hoses.

  17. Close the control valves.

  18. Remove the cutting attachment from the torch.

CAUTION: Welding apparatus that is improperly maintained or repaired can be dangerous.  Some parts and accessories from one manufacturer may fit apparatus from other manufacturers, but the assembly may not conform to the standards of either manufacturer.  For your own safety, specify and use parts and attachments from only one manufacturer in any assembly according to that manufacturer's specifications.

Service and repair of welding apparatus should be performed only by a qualified repair technician.  Improper service or repair, or modification of a product could result in damage to the product or injury to the operator.
